Authorities have identified the boy who drowned while swimming in a Grand Rapids lake Saturday.

Five-year-old Ayden Lee Demarre died following the incident at Crystal Lake, Grand Rapids police said Monday.

The police previously reported that officers were called to the lake, on the city’s north side, about 1:30 p.m. Saturday on a report of a possible drowning. Officers who arrived at the scene were told the boy had slipped under the water while attempting to climb atop a raft.

Police officers and other first responders jumped in the water and found the boy. He was transported to Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital, where he later died.

Officials are continuing to investigate the events leading up to the drowning, police said. The Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Itasca County Sheriff’s Office and Meds 1 Ambulance.
