The pale blue water tower with the nature-themed Perham logo on it is gone forever.
As anyone who has been around the south side of town in the last week has undoubtedly noticed, the water tower is now completely black from top to bottom. It’s the first in a multi-step painting project that will give the tower a fresh new look. When complete, it will have yellow stripes and a Yellowjackets design around the bowl. Workers with Champion Coatings started painting the exterior last Wednesday, after pressure washing off a decade’s-worth of dirt and grime that had built up on the tower since it was last cleaned and painted in 2003. City councilors decided in February that, as long as the tower was due to be repainted, it might as well get an updated design. They chose a Yellowjackets theme as an expression of the town’s pride in its schools and students. The theme also fit with the tower’s location next to Perham’s public schools. City engineer Jade Berube updated councilors on the project at a meeting last week. He said that, in addition to the progress being made on the exterior of the tower, the interior had recently been blasted and the first coat of a special interior paint had been applied. Second and third coats of epoxy paint were due to be applied by this week. Work will continue on the water tower for the next couple of weeks. On Tuesday, Berube said a second coat of shinier black paint should be applied to this exterior this week, with work on the Yellowjackets logo starting next week.
