FERGUS FALLS -- Otter Tail County board members, on Tuesday, April 28, were informed that property tax collections, through April 24, were only about 1% below the number of payments as compared to 2019.
“There has been no change to the due date, May 15, or the penalty schedule at this time due to COVID-19,” county Auditor-Treasurer Wayne Steintold commissioners.
Stein said that payments have been received each day since the 2020 tax statements went out.
“We’ll no doubt see a surge, like we do in most years, after May 1,” he added.
Stein has emphasized that property tax payments coming into Otter Tail County also provide for needed cash flow for townships, school boards and communities throughout the county.

Most county residents pay half of their overall property taxes in a given year by May 15, and the second half by Oct. 15.
“Right now, I could see the state Legislature making adjustments for the property taxes that are payable in October,” Stein added.
County Board Chairman Lee Rogness of Fergus Falls said that decisions by the state Legislature regarding fall 2020 property tax payments will probably be made after consultation with the Minnesota Inter-County Agency and the Association of Minnesota Counties.
The Minnesota Inter-County Agency represents larger counties such as Otter Tail, and the Association of Minnesota Counties includes all 87 counties in Minnesota.
