A Staples man is in custody after Perham police say he fled in a stolen car Thursday, July 18.

Cameron Mikkel Bendson, 19, is charged with fleeing a peace officer, receiving stolen property, and theft of a motor vehicle, according to court records.

After receiving a report of a driver swerving on Highway 10, Perham police Chief Jason Hoaby tried initiating a traffic stop with the driver, Hoaby told the Perham Focus. When the driver failed to stop, Hoaby said he pursued the suspect for about a mile. When the suspect drove through a fence, Hoaby called off the pursuit, he said.

A 2006 Ford Explorer was later found abandoned in New York Mills at around 12:30 p.m., according to New York Mills Police Chief James Gritz.

Gritz said no one was around the vehicle, but witnesses had talked to Bendson. At around 2:45 p.m. New York Mills police responded to a call that a vehicle had been stolen from behind the library.
