Perham man sentenced after being caught with 14 grams of meth

Juan Noriega, 36, of rural Perham has been sentenced in Becker County District Court for felony third-degree controlled substance crime.

According to court records, on Aug. 1, a state trooper pulled him over in Becker County for driving with a cracked windshield, an object hanging from his rear-view mirror, and brake lights that didn't work.

The trooper smelled marijuana and conducted a search, finding a baggie of meth that weighed 14 grams with packaging. Noriega also had a large knife on his person and a torch lighter consistent with meth use.

He appeared in court March 28 before District Judge Gretchen Thilmony, who sentenced him to 33 months in prison at St. Cloud, stayed for 20 years.

He was ordered to serve 105 days in jail, with credit granted for 105 days served, and was fined $1,000, plus $1,165 in court fees. He was ordered to abstain from drugs and alcohol, and get a chemical dependency evaluation and follow the recommendations, including aftercare. He was placed on supervised probation for 20 years.
