Two people were injured in a two-vehicle crash north of Perham at 11:07 a.m. on Aug. 18. The accident took place near the intersection of Highways 51 and 60, northwest of Little Pine Lake.

Sustaining severe injuries were Mickayla Oakland, 23, and Preston Gums, 19, both of Perham. Deputies said neither were wearing seatbelts. They were in one vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle, 48-year-old John Dahl of Perham, and a child passenger escaped injury. Both were wearing seatbelts.

First responders from Perham included EMS (Emergency Medical Services), fire crew members and police.

Boat trailer damaged by fire south of Vergas

A person near Sybil Lake, south of Vergas, was told by the owner of a shed that he could burn down the structure, which was old. He did so. However, a boat trailer behind the shed sustained some heat damage.

The person who burned down the shed will not be given a citation if he pledges money to repair the damaged boat trailer.

The owner of the shed had requested that the shed be taken down and then burned, in pieces. The owner said his instructions were not followed.

Vergas fire department personnel were on the scene of the fire which took place at 9:22 a.m. Aug. 22.

Fire destroys garage northeast of New York Mills

Sheriff deputies reported the loss of a garage to fire, after a lightning strike, at 5:42 a.m. Aug. 20 northeast of New York Mills.

The location was on 575th Avenue that divides Butler and Paddock Townships in the extreme northeastern section of Otter Tail County.

“The garage was a total loss and there was substantial smoke damage to the nearby house,” said County Sheriff Administrative Lt. Keith Van Dyke while meeting with the news media on Wednesday morning, Aug. 21.

There were no injuries and the Red Cross was at the location to assist the home owner, Van Dyke said.

Responding to the scene of the fire were firefighters from New York Mills, Sebeka and Menahga. The latter two departments are from the western section of Wadena County.

Theft takes place east of Fergus Falls

Several items were reported a stolen Aug. 22 from a business just east of Fergus Falls.

Deputies with the Otter Tail County sheriff’s office reported the theft of old copper pipe, old brass valves, a used stainless steel pressure tank and new copper wire.

An investigation was continuing as of Friday, Aug. 23. The total estimated value was close to $300.

Three injured in vehicle crash southeast of Elizabeth

Three people suffered injures in a traffic accident close to 3 a.m. Aug. 18, southeast of Elizabeth. The location was on 260th Street which also is north of Fergus Falls.

None of the injuries were life threatening, according to sheriff deputies.

Injured were the driver, Darrell Lee Jordan, 38, of Fergus Falls, along with two passengers also from Fergus Falls. They included Jennifer Lynn Bellville, 38, and Justin Nevada Holmes, 22.

Jordan was arrested and was taken to the county jail, pending charges for second degree DWI and three counts of criminal vehicular operation.

Storage locker break-ins reported

Storage locker break-ins were reported at two locations in Otter Tail County, both on Aug. 24.

One item was taken from a storage locker south of Perham, on Fort Thunder Road. A 36-year-old suspect was being sought. Deputies reported damage to the front and rear of the storage unit.

Three storage units were broken into just east of Fergus Falls. Renters were being contacted in order to compile lists of items that were missing.

Cash taken near Lady of Hills statue

Sheriff deputies reported that a cash box was stolen from the location of the 22-foot-tall statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, referred to as Lady of the Hills, just south of Inspiration Peak in south central Otter Tail County.

The incident was reported on Aug. 24.

Since the cash box is opened for cash removal on a weekly basis, there likely was only between $5 and $40 in the cash box.

Thieves pried off the cash box from where it was mounted. An investigation was continuing.

Trailer stolen

A trailer valued at $1,070 was taken from a location at Big Owl Loop, Loon Lake, south of Vergas. The incident was reported on Aug. 25.

The trailer was equipped with a wooden floor, metal angle, iron side rails and 4-foot steel grate.

Small horse statue vandalized

A small horse statue, at the entrance to a driveway just off Highway 1 and north of Fergus Falls, was vandalized on Aug. 25.

The incident took place near the intersection of Highways 1 and 18.
