Sheriff deputies, on Jan. 5, reported the theft of a snowmobile at Stalker Lake, northeast of Dalton. The snowmobile was valued at $1,100. Taken was a Polaris snowmobile, red in color with yellow and while lettering.

Deputies investigate house break-in

Authorities, on Jan. 3, reported a break-in at an abandoned house in Deer Creek that was under foreclosure.

There was $200 in damages and as of Monday, Jan. 6, sheriff deputies said it was unknown if anything was missing.

Citizens Academy coming up Feb. 5

The Otter Tail County Sheriff Office will again allow county residents the opportunity to learn more about sheriff department operations. A Sheriff Office Citizens Academy will run from Feb. 5 to March 25.

Most of the classes, from 7 to about 9 p.m. Wednesday evenings, will be at the Otter Tail Sheriff Operations Center in the town of Ottertail.

Topics will include investigations, the K-9 unit, corrections, SWAT team and much more.

“We feel it’s important for county residents to understand the policies and procedures of the Sheriff’s Office,” said County Sheriff Administrative Lt. Keith Van Dyke. “The Citizens Academy is a great opportunity.”

Snowmobile hits electric fence, injuries avoided

A snowmobile driver broke a section of electric fence at 12:56 p.m. Jan. 2 near Highway 78 in central Otter Tail County. Fortunately, nobody was injured.

The property owner called the sheriff office and was advised to position warning signs, in order to let other snowmobilers know of the approaching danger.

Fish house break-in, thefts reported

Sheriff deputies reported thefts from a fish house after a break-in reported at 3:13 p.m. on Jan. 2. The location was north of Fergus Falls near Highway 27.

Taken were spears, decoys and rod/reel combinations. The total value of the items stolen was close to $500. There were no immediate suspects.

Milk truck driver who fell asleep cited for crash

The driver of a milk truck who fell asleep and crashed his vehicle Dec. 31 northeast of Perham has been issued a citation for careless driving.

Sheriff deputies said the driver, from Wadena, crashed the milk truck at 6:10 a.m.

The accident took place at the intersection of Highway 8 and 525th Avenue, east of Big Pine Lake and north of New York Mills.

The driver was not injured.

Truck blocks one lane of traffic

A truck was stopped and partially off the road, blocking one lane of traffic north of Rush Lake and north of the town of Ottertail on Jan. 2. The truck was stalled as of 8:32 a.m.

A person who lives close by was able to use a tractor to get the entire vehicle back onto the roadway. The location was the intersection of Highway 14 and 453rd Avenue.

Tools, snow blower stolen in separate incidents

A resident northeast of Pelican Rapids, on Dec. 27, reported to the Otter County Sheriff Office the theft of more than $1,000 worth of tools. The incident was reported near Highway 31, in the Lizzie Lake area.

On Dec. 29 a resident of Deer Creek reported the theft of a snow blower, with an estimated value of $800.

Sheriff deputies said the snow blower was taken from a garage that was not locked at the time of the theft.
