The Ambassador of Bluegrass, Dick Kimmel, will be performing in New York Mills this Saturday, 7:30 p.m., at the Regional Cultural Center.
Originally from West Virginia, and now a resident of New Ulm, Kimmel received the ambassador moniker in a 1994 feature article in Bluegrass Unlimited magazine which noted that Dick Kimmel is a well-known and long-respected multi-instrumentalist and bandleader on both the bluegrass and old-time music scene... Kimmel has been performing bluegrass music since the 1950s, bringing his traditional based sound throughout North America and Europe. The concert in New York Mills is part of the Minnesota Bluegrass Community Concert Series presented by the Minnesota Bluegrass & Old-Time Music Association (MBOTMA).
Joining Dick on-stage are four talented musicians who truly present a bluegrass music variety show. Darrel Fuhr, from Redwood Falls, plays some of the most energetic and exciting resophonic guitar you are likely to ever experience, which has earned him the knick-name of Mr. Dobro on the Minnesota music scene. Paul Horrisberger joined Kimmel & Co as their bass player in 1992, but his specialty is singing original novelty songs like Man of the Stillwater Trolley and Remote Control Blues. Jerilyn Kjellberg brought her stellar vocals to Kimmel & Co in 2002. Jerilyn, who also lives in New Ulm, says that my voice is my bluegrass instrument. Tim OConnor has been playing 5-string banjo and guitar for more than 40 years.
Each performance by Dick Kimmel & Co includes a variety of traditional styles: driving bluegrass, warm country ballads, traditional bluegrass gospel, original songs that seem like classics, bits of comedy, and old-time stringband music.
Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 day of show. Children and students age 17 and under are half price. Advanced tickets can be purchased at the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center or by calling 800-635-3037.Originally from West Virginia, and now a resident of New Ulm, Kimmel received the ambassador moniker in a 1994 feature article in Bluegrass Unlimited magazine which noted that Dick Kimmel is a well-known and long-respected multi-instrumentalist and bandleader on both the bluegrass and old-time music scene...
