The Detroit Lakes School Board held a special meeting this morning to accept the resignation of High School Principal Steve Morben.
Morben, who served in the position for 13 years in Detroit Lakes, resigned suddenly late last week, but told the Detroit Lakes Newspapers he’d rather not comment on the reasons why at this point.
“It was time,” he said, “It was time for us as a family, and it was bittersweet. I’ve really enjoyed my 13 years, and I’m really going to miss working with the staff and students in Detroit Lakes.”
Morben expressed gratitude for his opportunity in Detroit Lakes, and says things are still up in the air with regards to what he’ll do next, saying they “have some things to figure out as a family.”
At the meeting there was no discussion on the issue, other than to confirm that the job will be posted until filled.
Superintendent Doug Froke declined to comment on the circumstances surrounding Morben’s resignation, citing data privacy issues.
In the meantime, the start of school is only five weeks away, so with a short time to find a new principal, Froke says it’s possible the district may consider doing a one-year contract. “You look at both internal applicants and assignments or external if there are people who are prepared to move this time of year,” said Froke, “This is a terrific community and obviously a great position, so maybe someone would want to take that jump on the First of August, who knows.”
