Don was born on February 21, 1938 in Mandan, the son of George M. and Bernice E. (Light) Helvig. He received his education in Center, ND. On October 9, 1965, he married Clara Weigel in Kintyre, ND. Don served his country in the United States Navy, being stationed in Japan on a South Pacific Island and in Alaska. Following his discharge, he was employed in construction, sales then as a law enforcement officer for seven years.

Don had many passions in life, with his most favored being family. Time spent traveling and camping together was always treasured. During Don's last few years, when he saw his grandchildren, his face lit up. Although he was unable to play with them, he smiled as they fed him chocolate and sweets. Don had an adventurous spirit. He loved to hunt deer and birds, with his faithful hunting dogs by his side. With his outgoing personality, being able to strike up a conversation with anyone was easy.
