Everyone knows the song, "White Christmas". Written by Irving Berlin it first caught on with servicemen stationed in the South Pacific during WWII.

Another Irving Berlin song, "God Bless America" is practically our unofficial national anthem. Perhaps you also know the song "The Last Time I Saw Paris" by Oscar Hammerstein. But do you know how he came to write it?

It was the Spring of 1940 and Paris had just fallen to the Nazis and Hammerstein was so despondent he couldn't work. He pictured the city as it had been and began to write: "The last time I saw Paris, her heart was warm and gay." It was a love song, and also a lament for something lost, perhaps forever. These fascinating stories and more will be the subject of a talk by Michael Lasser, writer and host of the nationally syndicated public radio show, Fascinatin' Rhythm.

His recent book, "America's Songs," tells the fascinating stories behind the most beloved popular songs of the last century.
