Eagles outlast Henning in season finale

New York Mills won the first two games against Henning Tuesday at the Sports Center in the regular season finale for both teams. But they lost the next two, before surviving for a 3-2 win over the Hornets.

New York Mills won the first two games against Henning Tuesday at the Sports Center in the regular season finale for both teams. But they lost the next two, before surviving for a 3-2 win over the Hornets.

Game one was very close until a kill by Betsy Helmeke, an ace by Kim Erickson and a kill by Bobbi Smith gave Mills their biggest lead at 20-14. Henning closed to within 23-22, before a kill by Hannah Rutten gave the Eagles game point. They went on to win 25-22.

Mills was behind in game two 13-9 when Smith stepped to the service line. The Eagles scored six straight to take a 15-14 lead. They outscored the Hornets 10-4 from that point. A kill by Smith gave Mills game point, and an ace by Nicole Nebosis secured a 25-18 win.

Henning came back in game three, taking an early lead and coasting to a 25-14 win. They led the whole way in game four as well to draw even with a 25-19 victory.

The Hornets kept their momentum going in game five, taking a 5-3 lead. Mills tied the score at 6-6 on a kill by Rutten. An ace by Emily Salo followed by a pair of kills by Smith put the Eagles up 11-7. NY Mills eventually won the deciding game 15-12 o a net violation.

Section 6A playoffs begin with a play-in game on Oct. 22. The quarterfinal round begins Oct. 25.
