A late-inning comeback attempt fell short as the Eagles softball team finally opened the season Monday against Ashby.

The Arrows three runs in the 3rd inning, two in the 2nd and two in the 4th to take a 7-0 lead on New York Mills and starting pitcher Tessa Wegscheid.

The Eagles scored one run in the 6th inning, and in 7th made things interesting for the fans who decided to tough out the wind and rain.

Alyssa Lee led off the inning with a walk and scored on a Kim Becker double. Becker scored on a Kristina Boe sacrifice fly and Brea Welter singled to drive in Emily Salo, who had reached on a single after Becker's double.

The comeback was too little, too late as the Eagles fell 7-4 in the season opener.

Brea Welter was 2-3 with one RBI, Kim Becker was 1-2 with one RBI and Emily Salo was 1-3 with two runs scored. Wegscheid gave up seven runs on nine hits. She struck out seven and walked five in the loss. NY Mills scored four runs on four hits and walked seven times.

The Lady Eagles did recover on Tuesday for a 21-1 win over Pillager. A full recap of that win will be in next week's EOT Illustrated.

A late rally wasn't quite enough for the New York Mills baseball team as they fell in their season opener at Pillager, 12-9.

Pillager jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings and broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning.

The Eagles rallied with three runs in the sixth and seventh, but fell short.

Alex Helmeke led the Eagle offense with three hits. Jason Burg added a pair of safties. The Mills offense struggled at the plate early on, finishing the game with 13 strikeouts.

Wade Salo started on the mound for the Eagles. He gave up six runs on six hits, walking three and striking out three. Jeremy Hagen gave up four runs on four hits in relief. He walked four and struck out one.

Mills will continue on the road in the early part of the season, traveling to Sebeka today (April 19) and heading to Wadena on April 20.

They travel to Bertha-Hewitt to face the defending State Class A runner-up on April 24 before finally returning home on April 26 against Otter Tail Central.
