The New York Mills girls softball team peaked at the right point in the season and pulled off upsets over Verndale and Sebeka to win the sub-section tournament on May 25. The Eagles beat both teams 12-6 and advanced to the section tournament on Tuesday, where their season ended in a first round loss to Wheaton.

NY Mills 12, Verndale 6

The Eagles pounded out 14 hits to beat the top-seeded Pirates. The first five Eagles hitters in the lineup were a combined 12-20 in the game. Tessa Wegscheid was 4-4 with two doubles, Steph Cichy was 2-5, Emily Salo was 2-4 with three runs scored, Kristina Boe was 2-3 with three runs scored and two RBI, and Brea Welter was 2-4 with four stolen bases and four RBI.

The Eagles scored three runs in the first, six in the second, one in the fourth and two in the sixth.

Tessa Wegscheid pitched for Mills. She gave up two runs in each of the fourth, fifth and seventh innings on 10 hits.

NY Mills 12, Sebeka 6

In the sub-section championship against the Trojans the Eagles had 11 hits. Tessa Wegscheid was 2-4 with two runs scored. She finished 6-8 in the tournament. Steph Cichy was 4-5 with three runs scored and three doubles against Sebeka. She finished the tournament 6-11. Kristen Perala was 2-4 with two doubles in the championship game.

The Eagles scored one run in the first, four in the second, two in the fourth, two in the sixth and three in the seventh.

Starting pitcher Steph Cichy allowed six runs on eight hits. The Eagles beat both teams 12-6 and advanced to the section tournament on Tuesday, where their season ended in a first round loss to Wheaton.
