The funeral services for Evelyn Esther Ponto, 88, Frazee, MN, will be Monday, September 29, 2008, at 2 p.m., at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Frazee, MN, with Reverend William Aufdenkamp officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery in Frazee. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, September 28, 2008 from 5-8 p.m. at Furey Funeral Home in Frazee, MN, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., and also one hour prior to the service at the church. Evelyn died in her home on September 23, 2008.
Evelyn Esther Zitzow was born January 31, 1920 in Luce, Minnesota to Richard and Mary (Loebrick) Zitzow. She was baptized, and confirmed on June 17, 1934, at Vergas Lutheran Church. Evelyn was raised and educated in rural Vergas where she attended country school. On April 18, 1939, she married Norman Ponto in Perham, MN. After they married, they moved to Frazee where Norman worked for the elevator and Evelyn worked for Swift Turkey Plant. She later worked for Star Drug in Frazee for 30 years and most recently for Lake Five Resort for 15 years until she retired in 2007.
Evelyn was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Frazee, serving on the Alter Guild for 20 years and serving committee chairperson for several years. Evelyn was also the caretaker for Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery for many years. She enjoyed keeping herself busy, especially with yard work, and was very involved with the lives of her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by four daughters, Elaine Stilke and Judy Nunn of Frazee, MN, Carolyn (Jim) Anderson of Chisholm, MN and Neda Ovsak of Jacksonville Beach, FL; three brothers, Marlin (Mary Helen) Zitzow of Perham, MN, Lester (Cookie) Zitzow of Stacy, MN, and Dennis (Marilyn) Zitzow of Perham, MN; fourteen grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and two great, great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband Norman; one brother Ellsworth; her parents; two sons-in-law, Charles Stilke and Herb Nunn; and one great-grandson Mark Stilke.
