BEMIDJI, Minn. - Bemidji firefighters responded to a report of an explosion heard for miles Monday night at a residence southwest of Bemidji.

The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office issued a preliminary release Monday night that included a caller at 5:49 p.m. reporting a house on Buchanan Avenue SW had exploded and smoke was coming from the residence.

Multiple calls were made to Beltrami County dispatch reporting the sound of an explosion. According to the sheriff’s office release, the 911 center received a number of calls beginning at 5:35 p.m. from people living for miles around. Some callers reported experiencing windows rattling and a force strong enough to dislodge pictures from walls, the release said.

The sheriff’s office confirmed one person was injured and taken by ambulance to the hospital.

A firefighter on the scene said the fire was extinguished and described what was left as a “field of debris.” Deputies on scene said the debris would need to be sorted through in daylight.
