Fire destroys garage north of Ottertail city

Fire destroyed a detached garage, which contained living quarters, Saturday afternoon, Oct. 7, at Buchanan Lake north of Ottertail city.

"The adjacent home did not catch fire, but there was significant heat damage to the exterior of the house," said County Sheriff Administrative Lt. Keith Van Dyke. "The occupants of the house, an adult and young child, were able to safely evacuate the dwelling."

Firefighters from Ottertail and Perham were called to the scene at 2:30 p.m. The garage was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived.

Cause of the fire was not immediately known, said Van Dyke. The owner of the house and detached garage, Brian Wittich, worked to contain the fire until firefighters arrived.

Driver injured after crashing into corn field

A driver was injured after losing control of a vehicle and crashing into a corn field east of Dalton on Oct. 14.

The accident took place near Johnson Lake, at the intersection of Highway 12 and 309th Avenue. The mishap took place at 3:16 p.m.

Rollover near Fergus Falls

A 25-year-old female received minor injuries a few minutes past midnight, on Oct. 14 just northeast of Fergus Falls.

"The driver fell asleep and hit her head during the rollover," said County Sheriff Administrative Lt. Keith Van Dyke.

The accident took place while the driver was traveling along County Highway 1. The car came to a halt near a bridge along the Otter Tail River.

Vandalism at Vergas

Sheriff deputies received a call on Oct. 14, with the caller reporting that docks were overturned and garbage dumped at Old Detroit Road, Vergas.

An investigation was continuing as of Monday morning, Oct. 16.

CraigsList scam averted

A resident who lives at Buchanan Lake, north of Ottertail city, reported that he did not fall for a potential scam related to CraigsList.

A check from what was later discovered to be a non-existent bank account arrived at the Lake Buchanan residence. Scammers called and wanted money for expenses but the Otter Tail County resident did not take the bait.

There also was reference to items to be picked up which had not been agreed to beforehand by the Buchanan Lake resident.

"We commend the resident for not falling for this scam and instead reporting the incident to our office," said County Sheriff Administrative Lt. Keith Van Dyke.
