FRAZEE, Minn. - A 17-year-old boy is in critical condition after his car flipped into a pond Friday night.

A passerby noticed the vehicle with its lights still on, about two miles north of Frazee on County Road 29 around 11:15 p.m.

Frazee Rescue and Frazee Fire were able to rescue Myrel John Schermerhorn of rural Detroit Lakes. He is believed to have been underwater for about 20 minutes.

Becker County Sheriff Tim Gordon said Schermerhorn was driving home from a Frazee wrestling program benefit when he started to skid on a curve and overcorrected, sliding off the road into the pond.

Alcohol and speed did not appear to be a factor in the crash. However, compacted snow and ice caused the roads to be very dangerous Friday night, Gordon said in press release.

Schermerhorn was initially taken to Essentia Health in Detroit Lakes and later transferred to a Fargo hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
