Frazee High School student Myrel Schermerhorn, hospitalized after a car accident on Nov. 18, is not yet awake, but his family says he's taking small steps in the right direction.
Schermerhorn was taken off paralytic and sedative drugs Monday, his sister Leah wrote on the family's CaringBridge website. He had been sedated to make breathing with a ventilator easier. His blood pressure medication and nitrous oxide doses have also been lowered.
It's a "baby step," Leah Schermerhorn wrote, but a positive one. She said doctors hope to continue to lower medication if Myrel doesn't fight the ventilator.
Myrel Schermerhorn has been hospitalized since his car rolled from an icy road near Frazee into a pond, leaving him submerged in frigid water for about 20 minutes. He is at Essentia Health's Fargo hospital.
