There will be a gallery reception for the new exhibit, Quilts of Valor, at the ITOW Veterans Museum on Tuesday, July 10 from 5-8 p.m. Quilts of Valor, which features the work of area quilters, opened June 29 and will run through August 5.
Quilts of Valor is a national program begun in 2003 with the goal of providing a quilt for every combat wounded soldier. Quilts of Valor has been particularly active in Perham. Since forming in 2005, over 120 quilts have been delivered. The group has set themselves the goal of creating 60 more by the end of summer, one for each Purple Heart recipient in the region. The 10 quilts in the exhibit are remarkable for their quality. While several of the quilts have patriotic motifs, there are others with wildlife and even flowers as the theme. All are lovingly pieced by volunteers and then professionally machine quilted. Each quilt is presented to a wounded soldier, along with a personal message from the group.
Visitors to the exhibit can write their own message on one of the quilts that has yet to be assembled. Local quilters Echo Doctor and Jenny Caughey will be on hand during the reception to talk more about the Quilts of Valor program. The reception is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
The ITOW Veterans Museum presents a variety of changing exhibits throughout the year. Following the Quilts of Valor exhibit will be a display of Liberty Posters of WWI, August 6 - September 30. Scheduled for September 28 is Aero Adventure, a fascinating exhibit from the NASA Glenn Research Center.
The ITOW Veterans Museum is located at 805 West Main, Perham. Hours are Monday-Saturday 10-5 and Sunday 1-4.
