A Dent man pleaded guilty in Otter Tail County Court to an assault charge stemming from a summer incident that left one woman with a broken jaw.

Samuel Lee Gilles, 25, pleaded not guilty in Otter Tail County Court to one count of assault in the third degree for causing substantial bodily harm. He later pleaded guilty to an amended assault plea.

Gilles was sentenced Tuesday to 90 days in jail, with credit for 63 days already served. If he violates his parole within the next five years, he could serve 15 months in prison. Gilles is also facing $16,751 in court fees.

According to the criminal complaint, Perham police officers were called to a home on the 500 block of Second Avenue around 4 a.m. on June 24. A woman who answered the door told officers that her friend, a female, had been struck in the face by Gilles. Officers then saw the woman who had been hit. They witnessed blood dripping from her mouth, which created a pool of blood on the floor.

Another witness told officers that Gilles struck the woman, causing her to fall backwards on the floor. Witnesses also said that Gilles had kicked another man during the altercation.

Officers later pulled over a vehicle in Dent; Gilles was a passenger.

Gilles allegedly told officers that he was in a fight, but that he did not hit anyone.

The woman who was hit in the face was taken to Perham Memorial Hospital. She was then transported to Sanford Medical Center in Fargo and was diagnosed with a fractured jaw.

Gilles was scheduled to appear before a jury on Oct. 20, an appointment that was cancelled.
