FERGUS FALLS -- Jim Olson began duties Jan. 6 as the new veterans service officer for Otter Tail County. His office is at South Court Street in Fergus Falls.
He replaces Charlie Kampa who is phasing into retirement and will work eight-tenths time at the county vets office at North Main Avenue in New York Mills.
“I’m just getting settled and learning from Charlie and the staff,” Olson told the county board of commissioners Tuesday, Jan. 7.
Olson is completing a career as an active duty member of the North Dakota Army National Guard where he served as an engineer. He completed three deployments overseas.
He and his wife have two children who are attending college, one at the University of North Dakota and the other at North Dakota State University.
“Since we are empty-nesters, we moved to Otter Tail County to pursue our love of the Minnesota outdoors,” Olson said. “I’m really excited to get started and work with our veterans throughout the county.”
More about vets services
Olson, Kampa and other members of the veterans service offices in Otter Tail County assist veterans in many ways.
There are a number of benefits to veterans that include compensation for service-connected disabilities, pensions for veterans, assistance to widows and other qualified recipients, educational benefits, home loan guarantees, nursing home assistance and medical treatment at VA medical facilities.
