There has been a sharp rise in handgun applications in recent days, according to the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities surmise the increase comes in the wake of the school shootings in Connecticut.

Handgun purchase applications for 2011 totaled 356. The number for 2012 was already at 470 as of Dec. 20. Permit to carry applications for 2011 were 400, and are already at 499 for this year.

In order to carry a concealed weapon, a person must attend a training class. Both purchase and carry applications require background checks, according to Sheriff Brian Schlueter.

Minnesota's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension tracks the number of requests for criminal background checks on people who apply for permits to buy and to carry guns.

According to Minnesota Public Radio, some local gun sellers are saying the Connecticut shootings have prompted customers to buy guns for personal safety as well as protection against possible future gun restrictions.

The holiday season is already a busy time for gun stores. According to statistics from the FBI, requests for background checks for gun buyers reach their peak between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
