Funding is in place for a study that could set the stage for two decades of residential development in Perham.

The "housing needs" study will be conducted by Maxfield and Associates, and will cost $17,500. A similar study in the early 1990's has been credited as being a major factor in the residential growth Perham has experienced over the past decade.

Funding of the study was discussed at the November 27 Economic Development Authority meeting. The city has agreed to fund half; and a quarter of the cost was expected to be covered by the city's Housing and Redevelopment Authority and the EDA. A grant from the Perham Area Foundation may also be sought, but the Foundation's maximum awards are $1,000.

New franchise eyed for new motel

In other EDA discussion, it was reported that the motel project proposed for the Happel Addition, near the new Dean's Country Market, has taken a new direction.

The developers, who were originally planning an AmericInn are now looking into a more competitively-priced franchise: GrandStay. Franchise fees are substantially lower, which could save as much as $800,000.

EDA annual meeting set

The Perham EDA annual meeting date has been scheduled, for January 31, from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

The next regular EDA meeting is Dec. 20, 7 a.m.
