Temporary signs, typically those familiar black hulks with changeable bright yellow letters, could face a crackdown in Perham.
"I have some real concerns on how they look," said Councilman Jerome Boedigheimer at the June 12 Perham council session. "And now they're creeping more and more into the downtown area."
"Temporary" signs are, for all practical purposes, becoming "permanent," said Boedigheimer.
The city's ordinance on those portable units isn't very thorough, but one requirement prohibits placement on city right-of-way, said Dave Neisen, Perham planning administrator. At least one of the several portable signs appears to be violating that provision.
The council generally felt that the city's sign ordinance needs to be reviewed and revised. As it stands, there is little control over sign placements in the industrial zones.

Downtown and the 3rd Ave business districts have sign controls that are more clear. But with the rapidly developing commercial area on the south side of town, the sign ordinance will be scrutinized.
The council assigned the city's planning and zoning commission to proceed with a review of the ordinance.
