Meet under the front porch at Douglas Lodge.

Which woodpecker's maniacal call became the model for Woody Woodpecker? It's one of Minnesota's own nine species of woodpeckers. Become more familiar with identifying marks, habits and calls of these forest sculptors during this walk to Mary Lake and points beyond. Learn more about these hard-headed chiselers while also enjoying the start of fall colors.

Music Under the Pines: Paul Jones, Acoustic Guitarist

Saturday, September 20, 2008, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Meet at the Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center.

Acoustic guitarist Paul Jones fuses a variety of musical influences during this exclusive performance. His unique finger-style creates a blend of ballads and instrumentals with overtones of contemporary folk origin. Enjoy songs from his relaxing album "Baptism River." (There will be a brief intermission during this two-hour concert.)

Itasca's Autumn Harvest Lantern Lit Hike and Family Fun Evening

Itasca State Park, Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center

Guides with lanterns will lead you down the lantern-lit trail to meet a variety of characters from Itasca's past. Learn about local fur traders such as William Morrison a teenage fur trade agent, Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, Mary Gibbs, Itasca's early pioneer homesteaders and about fire spotters in the 1930s. Group hikes will last about 40 minutes, departing every ten minutes from the Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center beginning at 6 p.m. The last hike will begin at 7:30 p.m. Suitable for all ages! Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Other family activities will be on-going including the music of Hickory Wind, outdoor campfire, shingle branding, 2-man log sawing, etc. Hot dogs, chips and pop will be available for purchase as well. All activities occur at the Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center from 6 to 8 p.m.

Meet at the Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center.

Enjoy the "folk-grass" sounds of local acoustic trio Hickory Wind. This concert is in conjunction with the Autumn Harvest Mystery in History Lantern Lit Hike and Family Fun Evening. Seats fill fast for this popular trio. Concert is free! (There will be a brief intermission during this two-hour concert.)

Drawn to the Outdoors: Nature Photography and Art

Meet at the Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center.

Join artist Judy Wegenast as she discusses the use of photography in the process of art. Judy will demonstrate the procedures she uses from the start of an idea for a painting to completion. She will share tips for both outdoor photography and using photographs for creating paintings. Workshop participants will have an opportunity to sketch a picture from a photograph.

Fall Fire Tower Hike

Saturday, October 4, 2008 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Meet under the front porch at Douglas Lodge.

Bring your camera and get out and enjoy the wonders and colors of Autumn! Join the naturalist for this 3-mile round trip hike to the historic Aiton Heights Fire Tower. Learn about the wildlife and plants of Itasca while enjoying the beautiful "blazing" fall foliage. Hike concludes at the fire tower. The tower is open for visitors to climb for a spectacular birds-eye view of the fall colors.

Music Under the Pines: Dancing Light

Enjoy the harmonic blend of Dancing Light. Their talent for music and songwriting make this national performing team of Kiki Carter Webb and Greg Webb a dynamic musical duo. Greg's acoustic guitar, supported by Kiki's vocal blend peppered with her percussion, makes for a cosmic acoustic folk sound. There will be a short intermission during this concert.
