The Yelowjacket tennis team struggled in two road matches last week.

On Thursday, Perham dropped a 6-1 match at Long Prairie-Grey Eagle. The Jackets only win came at No. 4 singles where Michael Buer won 6-3, 6-4 against Ryan Holt.

Gus Rutten played very well at No. 1 singles against multiple state-entrant Shane Ecklund, still losing 6-0, 6-1. Ecklund was the Class A Consolation runner-up last year.

Perham went back-to-back as they followed up Thursday's match with a dual at Wadena on Friday. The Wolverines won by the same 6-1 score over the Jackets.

Rutten earned Perham's only win, taking a 6-2, 4-1 (default) decision at No. 1 singles.

The No. 2 team of Tim Buchin and Joe Berns pushed their W-DC counterparts to three sets, losing 7-5, 3-6, 6-2. The Jackets No. 3 team of Dylan Ashcroft and Brandon Lange lost a close 7-5, 7-5 match.

"The boys are improving," said head coach Kyle Knutson. They are working hard to make themselves better and turn things around."

Knutson is in his first season with the Jackets. He is in his first year teaching in Perham and in his 14th year of teaching. He played high school tennis at Lakeville and went on to play at Concordia College. His assistant is PHS grad Aaron Shipee, who is a past member of the Jacket tennis team.

Perham will get another shot at W-DC when they host the Wolverines on May 4. They travel to Minnewaska on May 7 before returning home to face Park Rapids on May 10.
