Last year, Perham ran in very hot conditions at the W-DC?Invite at Whitetail Run G.C. in Wadena. Still, both boys and girls swept. This year, it was much cooler and windy, yet, both boys and girls teams came away with team victories.

After losing to Staples-Motley last week in Moorhead, the girls came back to beat the No. 8-A Cardinals by one-point (48-49).

S-M's Naomi Landecker was the medalist, but Perham had the second and third runners in Maddie McClellan and Abby Anderson.

Cassie Beseman was the team's third runner, placing 13th, with Shayla Fulford running a personal best 17:05 to finish 16th.

"Our girls are just starting to realize what they can do," head coach Jeff Morris said. When they get some more experience, they are going to be extremely tough by the end of the year.

The boys made a huge statement with their new kids on the block cruising to a first place finish with 28 points. Staples-Motley was a distant second with 59 points.

Keith Schornack won his first varsity race, beating No. 7 Jordan Bendson of S-M by six seconds, coming in with a time of 17:21. Sam Stoll, Alex Barney and Isaac Werner all had top-10 finishes.

"We might not have the 1-2-3 punch from last year," Morris said. "But with Keith, Sam and Alex becoming our new 1-2-3, and with our depth, this could be the most solid one through seven team we've ever had."

Klaus Weber had a personal best 18:17 to finish 11th overall.

Overall, Perham won five of the six races at W-DC. The boys J.V. team posted a perfect cross country score of 15, led by medalist Jordan Berns (19:00). The boys jr. high team also won, led by a second place finish by Brady Speicher.

Jenna Gigstead won the girls J.V. race (17:51), leading Perham to a team win in that race. The jr. high girls finished fourth.

Lucky Lindy

Perham will take some time away from competition until Sept. 11, when they compete in the Lucky Lindy Invitational in Little Falls.
