The Jackets first dip into the Mid-State pool didnt proved anything can happen in baseball from one game to another.

Perham traveled east to take on Crosby-Ironton in their first conference doubleheader of the season. Last year the Rangers finished seventh in the eight-team Mid-State.

The first game went as planned, a 6-1 win behind the masterful work of Philip Moenkedick on the mound. The junior went four innings in his first start, striking out five while allowing just one hit and no walks. Evan Meece pitched two innings of no-hit relief before handing the ball over to Ryan Enger in the seventh.

Perhams offense took advantage of an error and a passed ball in the top of the second to take a 2-0 lead. Enger reached on an error and scored the first run. Kenny Moenkedick singled and scored on a Justin Berns sac fly.

The Jackets scored two more in the fifth thanks to a string of singles by Matt Schornack, Matt Kalina and Tyler Doll. They scored single runs in the sixth and seventh to put the game away.

They should have saved a few of those runs for game two, as Crosby-Ironton turned the tide with a 5-0 win in the nightcap to earn the split.

The Jackets did have six hits and a pair of walks, but couldnt get the big hit.

After scoring one in the first, the Rangers scored four in the fourth inning, the first two off starter Johnnie Schmitz, who took the loss.

Season-opening loss

The season opener didnt exactly go according to plan as Perham was roughed up by Menahga, 14-9, last Friday.

Menahga took advantage of three Perham errors to score nine runs in the third inning to take an 11-3 lead.

The Jackets didnt give up, scoring three runs in the top of the fifth. After a two-out walk to Justin Berns, Herschel Masinas, Andy Kratzke, A.J. Masinas and Matt Schornack put together consecutive hits. Berns, Herschel Masinas and Anderson eventually scored, cutting the lead to 12-6.

Menahga scored two more in their half of the fifth and Perham put up another three in the sixth. Isaac Stoll tripled and scored on a Ryan Enger single. Moenkedick doubled to score Enger and eventually scored himself on a passed ball.

Stoll went 4-for-5 with two RBI. Enger was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. As a team, Perham knocked out 22 hits against Menahga.

We showed he can come through with some clutch hits, head coach Hans Hanson said. We gave up a few too many hits and way too many errors. Well have to tighten that up.

Perham will host Moorhead on Thursday in their home opener at Krueger Field starting at 4:30 p.m.

The Jackets added the Park Rapids Tournament to the schedule on April 22.
