Jackets stay red-hot

In the last month, the Jacket boys basketball team has lost just once. And that was the the No. 2 team in Class AA. To say theyve been hot would be an understatement.

In the last month, the Jacket boys basketball team has lost just once. And that was the the No. 2 team in Class AA. To say theyve been hot would be an understatement.

Perham continued their winning ways Tuesday night with a 62-54 upset win over Breckenridge. The win moved the Jackets to within one-point in the Section 8AA standings behind Breckenridge for the No. 3 seed.

Assistant coaches Brian Schwantz and Tim Schmitz both commented that they didnt think the team realized just how big this win is.

The Cowboys started out hot, but Perham quickly answered back, thanks to three consecutive three pointers by Matt Schornack. A late surge in the first period gave the Jackets a 32-27 halftime lead.

Perham started the second half on a 6-0 run to open their biggest lead of the game. Every time Breckenridge cut into the lead, the Jackets would have an answer. Perhams signature man-to-man defense never allowed the Cowboys back within six points from that point and they held Breckenridge nearly 13 points below their season average.

Perham had four players in double figures, led by Schornack and Caleb Anderson with 15 a piece.

Sinking the Lakers

The Jackets tough defense was once again the key as they picked up valuable section points with a 41-39 win over Class AAA Detroit Lakes Saturday.

The point structure for section seeding gives more weight to wins over teams in higher classes.

Perham got a great contribution from Logan Schultz, who played through a concussion (which wasnt diagnosed until after the game) to score a team-high 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds. He will miss the next week because of the concussion.

Avenged

The Jackets avenged their first Heart O Lakes loss of the season by beating West Central Area, 56-45 Thursday night. WCA beat Perham 60-54 on Dec. 19.

Caleb Anderson hit a buzzer-beater to end the first period, giving Perham a 28-22 halftime lead. Anderson finished with a game-high 19 points while dishing out five assists.

The second half was all about free throws as Perham was 8-for-10 from the line in the second half, including their final six points of the game.

Perham will have another chance to avenge an earlier HOL loss as they travel to Barnesville (11-8, 9-5 HOL) Feb. 17. The Trojans beat the Jackets 38-34 on Jan. 12.

Perham will have another chance to pick up important section points as they travel to Park Rapids on Feb. 21. Park Rapids was moved into Class AAA last year.
