Perham wrestling coaches kinda had the feeling they'd have a good team this year, despite losing four outstanding starting seniors from last year's Class AA runner-up. Even they didn't expect to start the season this strong.

The Jackets won their third straight Wadena-Deer Creek Invitational with 255 points. Perham won a total of nine individual titles to beat runner-up Thief River Falls by 80 points.

Perham placed in 13 of the 14 weights. In addition to the nine winners, the Jackets had one runner-up and a pair of third place finishers.

"We don't have the superstars we had like last year," head coach Robb Moser said before the tournament. "But we may be as deep as ever."

Perham asserted their dominance in the championship round, crowning champs in the first five weight divisions. Andrew Gorentz won by fall in the title match at 103 pounds with a first period fall. Isaac Werner, a transfer from Aitkin, won the 112-pound title with a 8-1 win. Jacob Werner had a second round pin in the 125-pound finals and Sam Warne finished he run with a 9-4 win for the 125-pound championship.

A pair of senior Barry Nelson won at 140, then Mac Stoll, another senior, started a run of three straight by winning the 171-pound title. Nathan Schmitz followed with the 189-pound championship, beating Tony Wegscheid of W-DC, 8-5. Casey Sazama completed the title run with a third period fall at 215 pounds.

Coming close was Joe Berns, who finished second at 130 pounds, losing to Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus' Nic Harrison in the finals. Taylor Doll was third at 135 pounds, as was eighth grader Jessie Hein at heavyweight.
