John Adkins, 91, of Fergus Falls died Tuesday, November 21, 2006 at the Broen Memorial Home.
He was born February 24, 1915 in Breckenridge, MN to George and Ella (O'Kane) Adkins. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Breckenridge and graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1933. He attended Wahpeton School of Science, where he lettered in football, and also Moorhead State College. He served in the National Guard from 1937-38.
On May 30, 1941 he married LaDonna Bollum in Minot, ND. They lived in Minot until 1950 when they moved to Breckenridge. In 1966 they moved to Otter Tail Lake. During the past six years they have lived in Perham, Battle Lake and currently Fergus Falls. John began working for Great Northern Railroad in 1937 and retired from Burlington Northern Railroad as a conductor in 1979.
He was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Maine Township and Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Fergus Falls. He was also a member of the Elks. He enjoyed vacationing in Arizona, playing cards, dancing and all sports. His greatest hobbies were fishing and hunting.
He is survived by his wife, LaDonna; two sons, Richard Adkins of Battle Lake and David (Leanne) Adkins of Eagan, MN; two daughters, Joan (Kevin) Quinn of Spicer, MN and Marsha Adkins of Fergus Falls; nine grandchildren, Tanasha Deacon, Rick (Julie) Fletcher, Barry (Jessica) Adkins, Cara (Stefano Follega) Quinn, Mick (Chloe) Quinn, Ryan Quinn, Joshua, Jennica, and Tessa Adkins; five great-grandchildren, Sean and Luca Follega, Avery, Hannah and Sophia Quinn and a sister, Ella Oakley of San Diego, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, George and Father Joe; two sisters, Rose Donahue and Sister Ignatia (Marion) Adkins, a son Dennis, and an infant granddaughter.
