After a 20 year run, the East Otter Tail County Historical Society's Quilt Show has ended.

"Right now, we're on hiatus," said Barb Heier, who has been one of the dedicated volunteers. "This was our last show...we sort of burned ourselves out."

The 20th annual show was hosted June 22-23 at Perham's Pioneer Grounds.

Attendance was about 430, which is less than half the 1,100 who attended the show in 2002, which was probably the peak year.

"The attendance has slowly dwindled," said Heier. The decline doesn't appear to be a reflection on the popularity of quilting--which is probably stronger than ever. But there are more shows now, scattered throughout the state. Between other quilt shows, family commitments and other recreation, there is simply too much competition for time.

Heier and Echo Dockter have coordinated the show in recent years, and basically, they're tired.

"We started planning in September. It was a lot of work," said Heier. A core of six volunteers is needed to put on the show. If somebody stepped forward and wanted to continue the tradition, Heier said she would offer support.

Quilting is still her love, and she hopes to organize a "quilt guild" in the Perham area.
