The New York Mills softball team made the most of their final regular season home game by completing a season sweep over Pillager with a 9-1 win last Thursday.

The Eagles scored in each of the first four innings to build an 8-0 lead. That was more than enough for Tessa Wegscheid, as she allowed just one run on five hits to the Huskies to pick up her eighth win of the season.

Brea Welter led the team offensively. Welter had RBI's in the first, second and sixth innings, finishing 2-for-2 with a sacrifice. Kristina Boe and Kim Becker each drove in a pair of runs.

The Lady Eagles will wrap-up their regular season at Bertha-Hewitt today (May 17). Mills beat the Bears (6-10, 3-9 Park Region), 11-1, on April 24.

Mills earned the No. 2 seed in the 6A North Sub-Section Tournament. They will host Cass Lake in the first round on Monday, May 21 starting at 4:30 p.m. The North Sub-Section semifinals will be played May 24 in Menahga at 12 and 2 p.m.

"The section is as balanced as it has ever been," head coach Bryan Dunrud said. "It is going to come down to who is playing well at playoff time."

The key for the Lady Eagles in the playoffs will be consistency.

"We need to start putting complete games together," Dunrud said. "Our defense has to be more consistent to allow us to win the close games, because we cannot afford to make mistakes when we face the more solid teams. One error can result in two, three or more plate appearances for the opposing team, which not only takes a toll on you on the scoreboard, but mentally as well.

"Offensively, we need to continue to battle," Dunrud continued. "We have some talent offensively, but we need to continue to have solid plate appearances every time up and stay within ourselves rather than trying to do to much."
