Recommendations on the future of Perham's municipal liquor store may come as soon as November.
A new location for the city-run retail liquor store has been discussed for nearly a year. The topic has been controversial for some merchants, who are concerned about the prospect of losing the liquor store in the city's downtown business district. The most frequently discussed site would be close to Highway 10--which would attract more highway traffic than the present downtown location.
In an effort to gather a broad range of viewpoints on the future liquor store location, Mayor Vince Pankonin named a steering committee. Pankonin asked that the council be presented with a report in October--with action expected in November.
Mayor Pankonin said he tried to get a true cross-section of people on the committee--downtown business representation, as well as members who have no specific interest in where the store locates.
On the committee are: Dave Still, Bill Rose, Mary Thomas, Chuck Hofius, Neil Wrangham, Councilmember Harriet Mattfeld, and liquor store manager Randy Hendrickx.
