PERHAM — Dreams are coming true for new Perham business owner Sheila Overland, who recently opened Kiss and Makeup beauty salon.
The salon opened in December inside the Harmonious Architecture loft, at 107 West Main Street.
"I grew up doing people's makeup for weddings and stuff like that, just for fun," Overland recalled, "And I decided to finally try it out for a career. I was in human resources before this, and while I liked what I did, it wasn't my passion."
Wanting to follow her true passion, Overland decided to get a lash extension license in 2019. She also wanted to do bridal makeup, and so pursued her esthetician's license. In that process she discovered another passion: skin care.
"I found my niche in life," she said. "I really love this industry. I feel like it fits perfectly for me."

Overland started working at Perham's Studio M, specializing in lash extensions, skin care work, makeup and more. Opening up her own studio was always part of her longer-term plan, and in 2021, she said, things fell into place for her to do so.
She was attending class at B Still Yoga — which used to be located in the Harmonious Architecture loft — and kept thinking about how beautiful that loft space was. She'd head to class with excitement about being in that environment.
"At the end of the yoga class, they said, 'Well, we're going to be here until the end of December, and then we're going to be in our new space,'" Overland recalled. "I was like: 'Oh no, what am I going to do? I love this space! I want to do yoga here every day.' And then I got to thinking... 'Actually, I should check to see who's going to be in this space.'"
While the former yoga space was already spoken for, Overland found that Suite 4, the space Kiss and Makeup would soon call home, was going to open up in December. She jumped on the opportunity. She chose the name Kiss and Makeup because she liked the play on words.
Since then, her business has taken off. She's been offering skin care plans, eyebrow work, lash extensions, facials, spray tans and more for the past few months. On April 1, she added nail technician Sindy Becerra to her team, to provide additional services.
While Becerra was a little nervous when she first started, she said she's fallen in love with the beauty industry.
"It's been fun," she said. "It's something new, but it's something exciting. And I actually love being here."
Becerra does all types of nail art, from gels to acrylics to pedicures, and she's hoping to learn how to do lash extensions soon, too. Overland hopes to teach Becerra herself, once she gets her instructor's license, which she is in the process of achieving. In the future, she'd like to start her own lash school.

"It's in the five-year plan for me to get the lash school off the ground, but we'll see what happens," she said.
Other plans for the future include working with Jaime Kopveiler, of Overflow Creative, a graphic design business also located in the loft , to create a confidence camp for young girls. The camp would bring girls and their moms together to teach them about skin care, confidence and more.
"We feel really fortunate that we're able to be a part of this community," Overland said. "And I really am impressed with how everybody is so close-knit."
