Crime and fire report: Domestic assault reported; $6,000 lost to 'oil rig' scammer

The scammer said he needed money “to get his oil rig working again” and convinced the victim to deposit money in Bitcoin for him. The scammer was sent $6,000, according to a dispatch report.

Monday, Feb. 13

3:25 p.m., near Otter Tail County, deputies assisted a Perham resident with an arranged property exchange.

10:44 p.m., near Otter Tail County, verbal domestic reported. No injuries. The parties were separated.

Tuesday, Feb. 14

1:25 p.m., near Otter Tail County, a Perham business reported a theft of merchandise.

2:55 a.m., near Otter Tail County, one arrested for fifth-degree drug possession.

7:41 a.m., near Otter Tail County, a caller reported finding their neighbor outside, on the ground and not breathing. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. No foul play is suspected.

9:30 a.m., near Town Line Road, Otter Tail County, one person was arrested for fifth-degree controlled substance violation, driving after revocation and drug paraphernalia.

2:26 p.m., near Otter Tail County, a caller said their mother has been the victim of a scam. The scammer said he needed money “to get his oil rig working again” and convinced her to deposit money in Bitcoin for him. The caller said $6,000 was sent to the scammer.

3:16 p.m., near west Main Street, Otter Tail County, parked vehicle damage reported.

4:35 p.m., near Otter Tail County, a domestic assault was reported. The victim was transported to a safe location. Upon obtaining a search warrant, officers entered the residence and saw the male suspect who then quickly hid in a crawl space and was not apprehended. The victim then contacted officers two days later and wished to recant their statement, however, the officer informed them the county attorney had already been notified and the case had been forwarded for possible charges. The case remains under investigation.

6:47 p.m., near Highway 210 and County Road 57, Otter Tail County, a vehicle struck a deer. A child occupant in the vehicle suffered a bloody lip. No medical assistance needed.

Saturday, Feb. 18

10:08 a.m., near Otter Tail County, a caller reported a neighbor’s dog bit a family member on the arm. The bite did not break through the individual’s jacket. The owner of the dogs said they would keep the animals on their property.

11:02 a.m., near Joten Lake Road, Otter Tail County, burglary. A caller said they returned home to find items missing and the door locks and hinges may have been tampered with.

12:49 p.m., near Pleasant Lake Road, Otter Tail County, a caller reported their neighbor’s dogs are on their property again. Officers spoke to the dog owners and they said they would keep their dogs on their property.

4:38 p.m., near Otter Tail County, a 42-year-old man was found in the woods and was believed to have been outside for more than 24 hours. The man appeared conscious but may have suffered severe frostbite. He was found by his uncle who said the man had recently suffered a stroke and was not his “usual self.”

5:15 p.m., near 3rd Avenue, Pelican Rapids, an underage driver was arrested for fourth-degree DWI.

8:48 p.m., near Highway 59, Pelican Rapids, a man was arrested for fourth-degree DWI, a firearms violation and fifth-degree possession of a controlled substance.
