Perham speech takes home the Class A Section 6 Championship

Ten Perham speakers qualified to compete at the Class A Speech Tournament, hosted by Eastview High School in Eagan on Monday, April 23.

PERHAM — The Perham Speech team hosted the Minnesota State High School League Section 6A Tournament on Saturday, April 9. The tournament consisted of 183 competitors from 20 different teams.

Perham brought 25 speakers from the Subsection 22A qualifying tournament to the Section meet.

Of those 25 Perham speakers, 15 qualified for and competed in the final round of their event. The final round consists of the top six speakers based on the three preliminary round scores. The top three speakers in each event qualify for state.

The team's assistant coach of seven years, Elena Weller, was selected for the Section 6A Coach of the Year. Weller's contributions to the program are numerous and date back to her time as a competitor on the team in the years 2003-2009. Weller has been instrumental in the development of a thriving and competitive speech team in Perham.

The 15 speakers who made the final round are: Shippee (Creative) ; Maddox Wagner (Discussion) ; Reid Starzl (Discussion); Beau Johnson (Drama) ; Tessa Starzl and Faith Kalina (Duo) ; Molly Pearson (Ex Reading) ; Brynn Greisen (Great Speeches) ; Madeleine Lamb (Info) ; Anya Roe (Info) ; Clodarl Seeman (Original Oratory) ; Reese Hunt (OO) ; Haven Roth (Poetry) ; Roman Guajardo (Poetry) ; and Josh Kalina (Storytelling)

The speakers advancing to the Class A State Tournament and their individual placing are:

  • Creative Expression: Shippee — 2nd
  • Discussion: Reid Starzl — 3rd
  • Drama: Beau Johnson — 1st
  • Extemp Reading: Molly Pearson — 1st
  • Great Speeches: Brynn Greisen — 1st
  • Info: Madeleine Lamb — 3rd ; Anya Roe — 2nd
  • Original Oratory: Reese Hunt — 3rd
  • Poetry: Roman Guajardo — 3rd
  • Storytelling: Josh Kalina — 1st
