PERHAM — Get your tennis shoes and bikes out. Perham Public Schools will be participating in the Minnesota Walk, Bike, Fun to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 12. It begins at 7:45 a.m. and goes until 8:15 a.m. The drop-off site will be at the corner of Southwest 7th Street and Coney Street, which is just one block south of Perham Health.
Perham Public Schools District Wellness Coordinator Jake Olson said that in the past 40 years walking or biking to school has gone down 30%.
“Kids are not as active as they were in the past,” Olson said. “Kids who walk or bike meet their recommended daily physical activity … Being active with things like this helps students be engaged and ready to learn when they get to school. They also have higher-performing students in the classroom. It is also proven that active students are less likely to suffer from depression and anxiety.”
Olson said this is an event they hope to continue in the future. It was on hiatus the past few years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
