A man who was an accomplice in the theft of a safe at Trinity Lutheran Church in New York Mills in 2006 was sentenced in district court July 24.

Jeremy Dale Sommerland, 26, formerly of NY Mills, was sentenced for burglary and damage of property in the first degree. He will serve 51 days in Otter Tail County Jail, with nine days credited for time already served.

Sommerland, a recent resident of Trent, S.D., had evaded law enforcement for the past few years. According to authorities, he damaged a lawn and building in NY Mills six years ago, and then was involved in the theft at Trinity. He and other suspects reportedly smashed a window in order to gain entrance into the church.
