If surprise and attention-grabbing were the main reasons for John McCain's choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate, it was mission accomplished. But with all the hypeing of her superior executive experience I decided to look up some facts. According to the Rand McNally road atlas, 2006, here are some population figures to consider:
Wasilla population 7,084 - 6 years as Mayor.
Detroit Lakes population 7,652 (D.L.'s Mayor for President?)
Some further reflection:
Alaska state population: 648,818

Minnesota: 5,059,375
A difference of 4,410,557 citizens to govern over. Yet Tim Pawlenty's 6 years of a two-term governorship experience was passed over as not essential at the very last minute - and he was one of the two top vetted. I think even he was shocked, as were many of us.
If McCain made this judgement, one can't help but question his true concern for our nation, but if it was a directive from the back room (Karl Rove?) then who's really in charge?
