Mark your calendar for the Menahga Family Fishing Derby Saturday, Jan. 17.

  The annual event, sponsored by the Menahga Civic & Commerce Association, is from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Spirit Lake.

More than $10,000 in prizes is up for grabs. The entry fee is a $5 fishing derby ticket.

The grand prize for this year’s raffle is a 2015 Ice Castle Fish House. The drawing will be at the pier at 3:45 p.m. Additional prizes include a StrikeMaster Magnum gas powered ice auger, gift cards and more.

Door prize drawings are held throughout the derby.

Several fishing prizes are also given out throughout the afternoon.

A $500 cash prize will be awarded for the third largest fish caught. There are also cash prizes for the largest game fish in two categories.

Category 1 includes Northern Pike, Walleye or Bass. Category 2 includes Pan Fish, Crappie, Blue Gill, Perch, etc.

In each category, first prize $100, second prize is $75, third prize is $50 and fourth-10th prize is $25.

Those participating in the derby must stay within the marked area and have only one line per person. Holes are predrilled in the area.

All contestants must enter at the boat ramp access.

Fish must be alive when entered at the judge’s stand. Contestants may enter more than one fish but can’t win more than one prize in each category.

Portable shelters are allowed the day of the derby only, subject to inspection. No fishing is allowed before 1:30 p.m.

No motorized vehicles are allowed on the lake during the derby.

After the fishing derby, check out the Fish Fry at the Menahga VFW Club. It runs from 4-8 p.m. followed by live music starting at 8:30 p.m.
