On Friday, May 26, Members of the Dent American Legion Post #148 visited the Dent Elementary school to demonstrate the role of the Legion members at the funeral of a veteran.

Most of the students remembered participating with Post 148 in a flag disposal ceremony in 2005 when Norb Lachowitzer sat in a wheelchair, his lap piled high with flags for the students to bring to the ceremonial burning. Norb was quite ill that day and died not too long after the ceremony. The demonstration funeral held for the students on Friday was to honor Marine Veteran Lachowitzer. The memorial service included the traditional honoring of the dead with a firing squad and the playing of Taps. The flag used in the service was folded in the traditional manner and presented to Marine Veteran George Bordgering.

During the folding of the flag the newest member of Post #148, Shari Fresonke, read about the symbolism of each fold. She also told the students about the notes played for Taps and the history of the tune.

Shari will retire from the Air Force on July 1 after a 24-year career. Shes been able to travel all over the world while on duty, which was exactly what she wanted when she enlisted. Her older brother was also in the military and traveled, so she thought it would be a good career for her. Shari enjoyed being part of the demonstration at Dent Elementary. She was raised in Dent and remembers playing in the same gym way back in 1970.

During the demonstration service, the students were very respectful and afterward showed their appreciation by shaking hands and thanking each of the Legion members present.

Legion members were joined on Saturday morning at the school by the Ladies Auxiliary for a community Memorial Day Service. That service included an annual tradition Roll Call of Deceased Veterans and Auxiliary Members. This year candles were lit in memory of Al Lachowitzer, Norb Lachowitzer, Jollene Moltzan, Clarence (Pete) Peterson, and Harold Woods.

Members of the Dent American Legion Post #148 also participated in ceremonies on Sunday, May 28 in Richville and Basswood.
