Mills softball team drops two

The NY Mills softball team opened the high school season with a pair of losses. The Eagles lost 11-6 on Friday to Ashby and 15-9 to Otter Tail Central on Monday.

The NY Mills softball team opened the high school season with a pair of losses. The Eagles lost 11-6 on Friday to Ashby and 15-9 to Otter Tail Central on Monday.

Against Ashby the Eagles scored six runs on nine hits. Morgan Kahilainen was 2-3 with two stolen bases and Kristi Boe went 2-4 with two stolen bases. Also collecting one hit each for the Eagles were Tessa Wegscheid, Brea Welter, Emily Salo, Hannah Rutten and Steph Cichy. Welter also had three stolen bases in the game.

Mills starting pitcher Tessa Wegscheid gave up 8 runs in the first three innings before being releived by Steph Cichy, who gave up three runs in three innings of work. The Eagles pitchers only allowed six hits in the game but Ashby took advantage of five Eagles errors.

On Monday against OTC, the Eagles managed to score nine runs on only five hits and fell 15-9. Tessa Wegscheid, Emily Salo, Brea Welter, Hannah Rutten and Steph Cichy each had one hit for Mills.

The Eagles gave up two runs in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth and nine in the sixth inning. The Eagles big inning came in the third when they scored four.

Next up for Mills is this Thursday at home against Verndale, 4:30 p.m.; and Tuesday at home against Pillager, 4:30 p.m.
