Sometimes, the final score doesn't tell just how well contested an event was. Take the Yellowjackets 102-83 loss to Moorhead in girls swimming last week. On the surface, a 19-point loss seems like it was no contest. But it was closer than it appears.
Moorhead won eight of the 12 events, with Perham taking second in seven of the 12 and third in five.
"We weren't that far behind them," head coach Sheri Ressler said. "Going in our times were right there with theirs."

Perham finish the meet with a bang, as the 400 free relay team of Jeanna Kratzke, Sara Formanek, Abby Kratzke and Leah Richter broke the school record with a first place time of 4:09.04. Their new mark is more than three seconds faster than the previous mark set in 2001 by Allison Lowe, Emma Otto, Ashley Januszewski and Brittany Lowe.
The Jackets first winner was Brooke Mickelson in diving with a score of 170.65. Ashley Niemela was third with 160.45.
Seventh grader Kelsey Kratzke broke her middle school record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:18.87, good for first place against the Spuds. She was also sixth in the 50 free. Sister Abby was third in the 100 butterfly.
In addition to the 400 free team, the 200 fee relay team of ???? (1:52.38) also won.
Leah Richter was runner-up in the 200 I.M. Kaila Formanek edged sister Sara in the 50 free as they finished second and third. Sara then finished second in the 100 free. Erika Conlin was second in the 500 free.
Jeanna Kratzke qualified for Sections in the 200 free with a fourth place finish. She also finished fourth in the 100 free.
This week, Perham will swim in Park Rapids for the third time this season as the Panthers host the 8A True Team Sections.
