MPCA recognizes volunteers for lake-monitoring activities

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has recognized local volunteers for their efforts to help the agency keep track of the water quality of Minnesota's lakes.

The Citizen Lake-Monitoring Program is one of the MPCA's most successful volunteer partnerships, according to program coordinator Jennifer Klang. CLMP volunteers around the state take regular readings of water clarity in selected lakes by lowering a white metal disk (seechi disk) into the water until it is no longer visible and then noting the depth. Van Kalinoski has been taking clarity readings on Lake Berger in Otter Tail County for 10 years.

The volunteers track their date through the open-water months and submit them annually to the MPCA. According to Klang, by helping the agency track long-term trends in water quality, CLMP volunteers contribute greatly to the MPCAs understanding of overall water quality in Minnesota.

For information on becoming part of the Citizen Lake-Monitoring Program, call the MPCA at 651-296-6300 or toll-free from Greater MN at 800-657-3864 or check them out on the web at www.pca.state.mn.us/water/clmp.html .
