A special fund established by a generous Perham-New York Mills native is helping make another Perham Parks and Recreation Department possible.
Soccer fields are among three larger projects the park board is planning this year.
Harley Karvonen donated the money for the fund, which has been tapped many times for park-rec related expenses.
Total cost of the project is projected at about $23,000. The Karvonen fund will be tapped for $10,500 of the project. The City will contribute $12,500 from the capital fund.
The other projects this summer will be the purchase of six recycled plastic picnic tables, six recycled plastic trash receptacles and four recycled plastic benches. Total cost is $8,900.

The playground unit will be installed in Arvig Park, by the ball fields, at a cost of $5,000.
In other park and recreation-related matters, the council accepted a bid from Phelps Family Ford for a new lawn mower. Phelps was the low bidder, at $12,298 for a Gravely model. Three mower bids were received by the city--one from a Twin Cities company and one from a Sioux Falls, SD, firm.
