A new fire rescue vehicle will be added to the Perham Volunteer Fire Department fleet within the next year.

The department has been researching a new rig for nearly a year. At the April 9 Perham City Council meeting, the council accepted the low bid from General Safety Fire Apparatus, Wyoming, Minnesota, at $137,808.

Three firms bid on the project, including one from Lake Park, Florida.

Delivery of the completed unit is expected within 300 to 365 calendar days.

Low gas pressure to BOF prompts improvement

Low gas pressure to industry on the northwest end of town, including Barrel O' Fun and Kenny's Candies, has prompted the city to install a larger line.

A $126,000 improvement on the natural gas system was approved by the council at the April 9 meeting.

Tests last fall indicated that the gas pressure to BOF and Kenny's was as low as 28 pounds per square inch, compared to 48 p.s.i. for the Industrial Finishing Services, at the East Industrial Park.

To increase the pressure and volume of gas, the council reviewed a four inch and six inch main options. Also, "looping" the system around the west end of the city will increase the pressure significantly.

Two firms gave price quotes for the project: Arvig Communication Systems and Quality Construction.

Recognizing the need to prepare for future industrial and residential expansion, the council approved the six inch lines--accepting the quote from ACS for $122,588.

Sealing planned for

Perham airfield

A $36,000 sealing and crack-filling job this summer should extend the Perham Municipal Airport's life for another five years.

Local pilots have complained about the condition of the airfields.

Rather than a costly resurfacing, the city concluded that a "rejuvenator application" and sealing should improve the surface and guard against deterioration for about five years--at which time the air strip will be evaluated for a possible complete re-surfacing. An overlay could cost as much as $250,000.
