Are you a "Friend of the Library"?
On Tuesday, April 17 an exploratory meeting was held at the Perham Area Public Library to explore the idea of forming a "Friends of the Library" group to enhance, enrich, expand and promote library services and resources.
In other communities The Friends are community members who believe that a good library is essential to the cultural and economic well being of the community. They focus public attention on the library services and activities, strengthen and expand library services, sponsor programs for kids and events for adults, and supplement funding, allowing for special services and materials that might not otherwise be possible.
According to the Minnesota Association of Library Friends, some of the reasons Friends groups are formed are:
Public Relations - To create awareness in the community of the library, its services and needs.
ADVERTISEMENT
Advocacy - By speaking to civic groups, attending government meetings, and writing legislators.
FUNdraising - To undertake projects to raise needed funds for the library.
Sponsoring Programs - Assist staff to provide activities of cultural interest in the community.
Volunteering - To provide volunteer help in the library, when and where needed.
It was discovered that nearly 20 years ago, bylaws for a Friends of the Library organization in Perham were written and the group had since become inactive. A new group would build on that foundation.
An organizational meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 15 at 5:00 p.m. at the library. At that time the group will be formalized, officers elected, and future direction set.
