Perham residents are in for a few adjustments this winter.

In an effort to save on costs and time, the city is enacting a new winter parking system.

Effective this season, all roads within the city must be cleared - on both sides - when two or more inches of snow falls on the ground.

Police Chief Jason Hoaby said the city will do its best to attempt to contact drivers who fail to move their cars off the streets. If attempts aren't successful, towing will be the next option.

Hoaby said during a city council meeting that the new rule will save on fuel costs and time for plow drivers, as it will eliminate the need to re-plow as cars alternate sides. It could also save those drivers who left cars on roads and were subject to added snow pushed on by the plows.

While that could cause a bit of work for the towing companies around town, Hoaby said the city wants to work with people to avoid the towing option - it's essentially a last resort.

Nothing will change for the city's snow emergency routes, as they had already been held to the 'no parkingduring snowfall' rules.

Hoaby said the best thing to do is to keep an eye on the weather and think ahead to avoid an unnecessary trip to the impound.
